The Global Leadership Experience is a unique short course that gives young people the rare opportunity to meet, collaborate and connect with other likeminded young people from around the world, to explore ‘being a leader’. Cara Hayes-Williams and I put ourselves forward for the 2019 Global leadership experience held at Atlantic College in the Vale of Glamorgan.
After a short commute from Cardiff, Cara and I arrived at the school and met the amazing people that we would spent the next two weeks with. Over 30 different nationalities from all over the world were represented so the group was full of diversity. We spent a lot of time getting to know everyone and growing the relationship between us (as a group) as a lot of our activities involved teamwork and communication. During the two weeks we unravelled the many different types of leadership styles and how to use them in practical scenarios. All the activities, whether it be rock climbing or caving, involved putting into practice our ability to lead others.
One of the most rewarding parts of the activities was seeing those who typically wouldn’t lead, leave their comfort zone and take charge of a situation.
We also got to see how different groups can approach the same scenario with their own creative solutions.
Another key focus was finding our “what”. What is it that we want to do as a leader? What is it that we want to change in the world? Living with so many amazing and creative people, for the duration of the course, really helped myself and others discover what it is we want to contribute to the world.
The journey we all had taken allowed us to deeply reflect on ourselves and see how capable we are of achieving anything we put our mind to. Our perspective on what true leadership is had completely changed and we were able to see the leader within ourselves.
The most valuable thing I learnt is that we all have the capability to change the world for the better and that a true leader isn’t always the one with an army of supporters, it’s the person that shows passion and commitment to a course and is not afraid to take the first step into the unknown to make a change. We are all leaders, we just have to let that quality flourish.
Ysgol yr Iwerydd i Arweinwyr Ifanc

Mae’r Profiad Arweinyddiaeth Byd-eang yn gwrs byr unigryw sy’n rhoi’r cyfle prin i bobl ifanc gwrdd, cydweithredu a chysylltu â phobl ifanc eraill o’r un meddylfryd o bedwar ban y byd, i ystyried beth yw ‘bod yn arweinydd’. Fe wnes i a Cara Hayes-Williams roi ein henwau i fod yn rhan o’r profiad arweinyddiaeth byd-eang a gynhelir yng Ngholeg yr Iwerydd ym Mro Morgannwg.
Wedi taith fer o Gaerdydd, fe wnes i a Cara gyrraedd yn yr ysgol a chwrdd â phobl arbennig a threulio’r bythefnos nesaf â hwy. Roedd dros 30 o wahanol genhedloedd o bedwar ban y byd wedi’u cynrychioli felly roedd y grŵp yn llawn amrywiaeth. Fe wnaethom dreulio llawer o amser yn dod i adnabod pawb a chreu perthynas rhyngom (fel grŵp) gan fod llawer o’n gweithgareddau yn cynnwys gwaith tîm a chyfathrebu. Yn ystod y bythefnos fe aethom i’r afael â’r nifer o wahanol fathau o arddulliau arwain a sut i’w defnyddio mewn sefyllfaoedd ymarferol. Roedd yr holl weithgareddau, p’un ai dringo creigiau neu ogofa, yn ymwneud â dangos ein gallu i arwain eraill.
Un o’r pethau a roddodd y mwyaf o foddhad oedd gweld pwy na fyddai fel arfer yn arwain, yn cymryd cyfrifoldeb o sefyllfa.
Fe wnaethom hefyd weld sut all gwahanol grwpiau yn yr un sefyllfa ddod o hyd i’w hatebion creadigol eu hunain.
Ffocws allweddol arall oedd dod o hyd i’n “beth”. Beth ydym ni eisiau ei wneud fel arweinydd? Beth ydym ni eisiau ei newid yn y byd? Drwy fyw â chymaint o bobl arbennig a chreadigol yn ystod y cwrs, fe wnaeth hynny fy helpu i ac eraill i ddarganfod beth rydym eisiau ei gyfrannu i’r byd.
Yn ystod y siwrne hon cawsom feddwl am ein hunain a gweld sut allwn gyflawni unrhyw beth yr ydym eisiau ei gyflawni. Roedd ein persbectif o ran beth yw arweinyddiaeth dda wedi newid yn gyfan gwbl ac roeddem yn gallu gweld yr arweinydd yn ein hunain.
Y peth mwyaf gwerthfawr a ddysgais oedd bod gan bob un ohonom y gallu i newid y byd er gwell ac nad yw arweinydd da bob amser â llu o gefnogwyr, arweinydd da yw’r person sy’n dangos diddordeb ac ymrwymiad i gwrs ac sydd ddim ofn cymryd y cam cyntaf i’r anhysbys i wneud newid. Rydyn ni i gyd yn arweinwyr, ond mae angen i ni adael i’r rhinwedd hwnnw amlygu ei hun.
