A Curriculum 4 Life Update

c4life site

The Curriculum for life working group has been meeting monthly to create a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of PSE lessons and how they need improving.

The group have been working with a website developer Youth Friendly to develop the existing Tools4Life website, making it more accessible and adding more information to the website.

The group are now creating a campaign alongside the website so young people can show their support in asking for PSE lessons to be improved. The group are hoping to have the website launched soon! Here’s a sneaky preview of the new updated website.

Coats To Go Project!!

coats 2 go

CYC members have been concerned about the number of people sleeping on the streets in Cardiff this winter and as a result they developed social action called Coats to Go in the city centre.

The idea is simple take one coat rail and donated coats from the Education Department and leave it where people are able to access it on a daily basis. Anyone in need of a free winter coat can take one and if you would like to donate a coat leave one on the rail.

Project lead and CYC Chairperson Xinyu Ye (17) said ‘Social media played an important part in sharing this project with over 6,000 people on Twitter and our Facebook reach was over 60,000! This has meant that in the projects first two week 28 coats are now in the hands of people that need them. Thanks everyone’

The coat rail in situated in Barrack Lane, just behind Grassroots CF10 2GG, 10.00am – 4.00pm.

iSay Ambassadors

The iSay Ambassadors have been working extremely hard this term. Since the iSay Ambassadors have been delivering workshops in November 2016 they have engaged with a total of 969 children and young people across schools in Cardiff.

Lots of positive feedback has been received telling us their knowledge on children’s rights and democracy has increased by 20%!

iSay Ambassador Emma (19) said ‘ The debates that happen with the young people in the workshops are great, I really enjoy them!’

If you’d like to keep up to date with the work they have been doing, give their Facebook page a like – I Say Ambassadors.

Please call 07976056135 or email sophiejones@Cardiff.gov.uk for more information on how to book your free workshops.

First Aid Training For All Campaign News

First Aid

The CYC First Aid Training for All working group have been hard at work over the three months developing a plan on how to address the challenge of getting first aid in the curriculum and every school to have a defibrillator.

The first action for CYC members was to hold meetings with first aid providers in the city, so meetings with British Red Cross and St John Ambulance took place in January. The meetings were very positive and they both agreed to help support the campaign starting with the offer of free first aid workshops to a range of local six forms groups.

CYC members felt that they should put their money where their mouth was and get trained! British Red Cross delivered an evening of training where young people learnt valuable skills such as CPR, recovery position, scolds and bleeding.

Working group member April Spiteri (15) said ‘Our campaign continues as we have written a letter to Assembly Member Suzy Davies to support her call to have a debate in the Assembly about including first aid in the National Curriculum’

CYC Members will now meet Assembly Members on the 29th of March at the Senendd to share their campaign. Keep a look out at our twitter account for updates and photos from the day!

Assembly Member meeting

Young Inspectors Chloe and Angharad met with Mark Isherwood conservative Assembly Member for North Wales to talk to him about the recent work that has been carried out on the refreshed National Participation Standards and how the framework is being used in Cardiff.

Mark was very keen to hear how young people had helped in the new developments and their views on the forth coming National Youth Assembly. Chloe and Angharad were joined by Josh chair of the Young Wales Project Board.

Fitzalan High School Develop Community Manifesto

daf

The iSay Ambassadors Team worked with pupils from Fitzalan High School as part of their Eisteddfod celebrations early this month.

After receiving a workshop to enable participants to understand children’s rights, democracy and participation the young people then split into groups to create a manifesto and discuss issues present in the areas they live.

The community manifesto will now be made available to candidates in the local election taking place in May so they can help work on the issues raised by pupils, which included concerns over safe playing areas, littering, dog fouling, quality of local services and substance misuse.

CYC Met With Future Generations Commissioner

future generations commissioner meeting

Seven CYC members went to meeting Sophie Howe, Further Generations Commissioner in January. The meeting enabled young people to find out more about the role of the Future Generations Commissioner as well as raise concerns and share key issues raised by young people.

CYC Member James Martin (16) said ‘It was great to meet Sophie, she was friendly and explained her role which covers a lot of things’

Issues discussed included Brexit, the M4 relief road and the future career pathways for young people.

Families First Review

families first review

The Active Involvement Team (AIT) have been running workshops across the city to enable young people to take part in a review of the Families First Programme.

Families First provides support for families across 50 services and has been running in Cardiff for the last four years but it is now coming to the end of its funding cycle.

As part of the development of Families First services and possible re-commissioning AIT developed a 1 hour workshop to provide a platform for young people to identify issues that their families face and to highlight potential solutions.

Participation Worker Lee Richards said ‘It’s been really great over 200 young people have taken part in the workshops with more planned in the coming weeks. We would like to take this time to thank the services, staff and most importantly the young people that have given up their time to help us’

Young Inspector Team Give A Thumbs Up!

A new group of Young Inspectors have been trained to carry out an inspection of the Early Years strand off the Families First Programme. This time the Inspectors were recruited from the parents group at Grassroots in the city centre where they attend on a weekly basis.

The Inspectors received training in Children’s Rights, Democracy and the National Participation Standards. Their training took place over a number of weeks before they carried out the inspection. Early Years Services were invited to a speed dating style session by the Young Inspectors to discuss their work and how they meaningfully involve service users.

Young Inspector Charlotte(19) said ‘I was nervous at first but I really enjoyed it as the training was fun and the people were really nice’.

In recognition of all their hard work during the training the Young Inspectors went along to an ice skating session at Cardiff Winter Wonderland along with their children. Thanks guys you were amazing!
