Chair & Vice Chair Election Guidance 2025

Elections for Cardiff Youth Council’s Chair, Vice Chair and Member of the UK Youth Parliament (MYP) will take place on Wednesday, 18th June in the SPARK building on Maindy Road. The election process will start at 5:30 to allow more time for candidates to travel to building.

The election process will be as follows:

  • CYC members can only stand for election if they have been active members, prior to the election date, for at least 3 months.
  • CYC members can only vote if they have been active members, prior to the election date.

For the Chair/Vice Chair role

  • Candidates with the most votes will become the Chair, and the candidate with the second highest number of votes will become the Vice Chair.
  • CYC members will need to register their interest to stand for election via a form, before Friday, 13th June, with a brief statement of why they wish to stand and what they can bring to the role.
  • The Chair/Vice Chair election will be held first Followed by the MYP election
  • At the general meeting on Wednesday, 18th June, each candidate will have 2 mins to present to the rest of CYC why they wish to stand and what they can bring to the role.
  • Voting will be done by proportional representation, and you will be able to rank the candidates in order of preference.

If you would like to stand for election, you will need to meet the following criteria:

The Chair:

  • Be committed
  • Be confident
  • Chair meetings & encourage people to actively participate
  • Delegate work and responsibilities
  • Be approachable
  • Be assertive
  • Be punctual
  • Promote CYC and young people across the city
  • Take responsibility with decisions
  • Represent CYC at events and within projects
  • Attend pre-meetings with staff, exec meetings, general meetings and any necessary training required

Vice Chair

In addition to the above

  • Stand in for the chair in their absence, support the chair with their duties

MYP

  • Eligibility: You need to be between 11 and 18 years old
  • Campaigning: During the campaign period, you can submit a manifesto for other young people to vote on
  • Engagement: As an MYP, you will engage in debates, campaigns, and discussions that can influence national policies. This includes attending conferences, leading campaigns, and representing other young people in various settings
  • Development: MYPs participate in development work, such as debating motions and deciding on issues for the annual survey called ‘Make Your Mark’, which is then debated in the House of Commons
  • Networking: You will have opportunities to meet like-minded individuals, learn from mentors, and potentially get to know professionals and politicians

  • Promote CYC and young people across the UK
  • Take responsibility with decisions
  • Represent CYC at events and within projects
  • Attend an Annual Conference in July
  • Attend the House of Commons in November
